FENCES PLAY CAMPAIGN

The play Fences is a play by August Wilson set in 1950s Pittsburgh. The play features an African American family, and focuses on the head of the household Troy, and how his bitterness affects the lives of his family. The goal of this design was to translate these themes through the use of type and imagery. Capturing the aesthetic and soul of this play in the design were key goals. The target audience of this design are for theater enthusiasts, as well as fans of this particular play.

The design focuses heavily on the plays main theme, the Fence and how it is a metaphor for the characters views on the world, how it keeps it out, and keeps the characters in. The fence is rendered to visually create the planks and beams of a fence as well as a color pattern similar to that of older baseball advertising, overlaid with a worn and wood-like texture. Throughout this design is the tagline, the theater location, dates and times, and the main stars of the show. The biggest challenge to this design was the balancing of information and negative space. The mediums this design is rendered on is through typical ways theater productions would be advertised, through posters, billboards, and playbills. Overall this design combines the 1950's baseball aesthetic with the working class feel of the Pittsburgh family the play focuses on.
